DWI Interlock Devices

An interlock is a machine that is manufactured by Monitech. Monitech has a monopoly on the device, which is all regulated by statute. They actually have a microchip in the machine, so each time you blow on it, it records whether or not there is alcohol on your breath. It also records what time you’re blowing on it, because I’ve seen violations where someone tried to start their car at two in the morning, but their driving privileges didn’t allow them to drive at two in the morning. Prosecutors try to use that evidence against the suspect in court, so it gets complicated. Currently, there is a $200 installation fee to get an ignition interlock device, and then it costs $50 a month. The only exception is if a convicted individual has to drive a corporately owned vehicle for work – this vehicle does not have to have an IID installed.
